INTRO: Did you see Steeler Wide out Antonio brown twerking in the endzone last Monday night? Well..the NFL sure did and they’re already doling out the fines. Our derek mcginty wonders when the NO Fun League will get the message….and lighten up.
Anybody remember the XFL? Back in 2001…it was professional wrestling’s answer to the idea that the NFL had become stuffy…unhip..boring …your granddaddies football league. In the XFL he fair catch was history. Want a crazy nickname on your jersey? Go for it. Over the top endzone celebrations? Shake yo groove thang!! If you don’t remember any of this, its cause the XFL lasted about as long as it took fans to realize even a bunch of audacious rule changes couldn’t make up for a lousy product.
But that doesn’t mean XFL creator Vince McMahon wasn’t asking the right questions– Why can’t players have whatever they want on the backs of their jerseys? And why for heaven’s sake …can’t we have those crazy end zone celebrations back?
Because let’s be real—it’s just football. Entertainment, people! Nobody’s out there discovering any new subatomic particles.
And I for one miss the antics of guys like Terrell Owens… Ocho Cinco…and even… the Redskins fun bunch…all of whom would be penalized and likely fined under today’s school marm regime. Did they go too far? Sometimes…and I’ll be honest… I’m just fine if I don’t ever have to see Antonio brown twerking again.
Still…I’d risk it just to see what any of them might come up with next time. Remember… The NFL easily beat back the XFL because it had better players, coaches and everything else… but I’d argue the upstarts had some better ideas…ideas that even now might keep the NFL from becoming my granddaddy’s football league.
